TIANTIAN LIANG

Faculty

Dr. TIANTIAN LIANG serves as Assistant Teaching Professor of Group Piano and Piano Pedagogy in the Kitt School of Music at Northern Arizona University, where she teaches class piano, coordinates the piano pedagogy certificate, and supervises piano pedagogy students. Liang maintains a multifaceted career as a pianist, organist, harpsichordist, and teacher. 

 

As a dedicated scholar in pedagogy and performance, Liang’s research interests include the works of underrepresented composers. She has presented at numerous piano pedagogy conferences. Recently, she performed a lecture-recital for the 2022 Southern College Music Society Conference titled “Introducing Chinese Piano Music to the Advanced Student: Pedagogical Uses for Tan Dun’s Eight Memories in Watercolor.” She most recently performed selections from Fanny Mendelssohn’s Das Jahr at the 2023 NCKP in Lombard, IL and the Music by Women Conference at Mississippi University for Women. Other presentations include “Yvonne Loriod’s Influence on the Piano Works of Olivier Messiaen” at the MTNA Collegiate Chapters Symposium at Ball State University, the Ohio Music Teachers Association Southwest Conference, and the 2020 MTNA National Visual Conference. Her current projects include repertoire resources of underrepresented composers for teachers of elementary, intermediate, and advanced students. In 2024, Liang will present “Pedagogical Uses for Rautavaara’s Etudes” for the National MTNA Conference in Atlanta, GA.

Liang’s performances span the United States and Europe. As an advocate for new music and underrepresented composers, Liang’s current projects include performing and researching the works of Fanny Mendelssohn, Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, and Xu Zhen-min. She is also premiering and recording the oboe and piano works of the Afro-British composer Althea Talbot-Howard.

Liang’s degrees include a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a Performer Diploma from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, a Master of Music from Rice University, and a Bachelor of Music from Concordia College. Her teachers include Michael Chertock, Vicki King, Jean Louis Haguenauer, Edmund Battersby, Richard Ratliff, Brian Connelly, and Jay Hershberger.
